VIC: Napthine wants health union official to quit

Victorian Community Services Minister Dr DENIS NAPTHINE has accused a health union official
of a conflict of interest because she's leading an industrial campaign while standing as a
Labor Party election candidate.

Dr NAPTHINE has called on Health and Community Services Union state secretary KAYE
DARVENIZA (pron: DAR-vn-EEza) to resign.

Ms DARVENIZA is Labor's candidate for the safe upper house inner city seat of Melbourne
West, now held by Labor veteran JEAN MCLEAN, who retires at the coming state election.

But Ms DARVENIZA says there's no conflict of interest, she's simply doing the same job she
would be doing if she were not a candidate.

Ms DARVENIZA'S union, which represents disability services workers, is planning a statewide
24-hour strike for Tuesday, the latest action in its series of rolling stoppages and bans.

Its dispute with the state government over demands for a 14 per cent pay rise, more staff,
more training and more programs for clients, goes before the Australian Industrial Relations
Commission (AIRC) tomorrow afternoon.
