Fed: Costello says no tax changes as part of welfare reform
CANBERRA, Dec 13 AAP - Federal Treasurer Peter Costello said today the government would
not be announcing any tax changes as part of its welfare reform.
"I think you have to look at all sorts of things.
"You have to look at tapers, you've got to look at participation incentives, you've
got to look at mutual obligation requirements and that's what we'll be looking at with
our statement later in the week," he told journalists.
But he said the statement tomorrow about welfare reform would not include tax changes.
"Tomorrow's statement is going to set out where we intend to take welfare reform but
it won't be setting out tax changes."
Family and Community Services Minister Jocelyn Newman is expected to announce the government's
response to the McClure report on welfare reform tomorrow.
Senator Newman has signalled the statement would not be the last from the government
on the issue and that the reform was looking up to 10 years ahead.
