FED: Cane farmer lucky he waited to be an Aussie

CANBERRA, Feb 3 AAP - Spanish born sugar cane farmer Angel Muguira was lucky he refused to
sign the first time he was asked to fill in a citizenship paper in Australia.

It was during World War II when Mr Muguira and his mates from the north Queensland town of
Ayr were being recruited for army service.

"They called me up for the army and told me to sign this paper to become a British
citizen," he recalled today.

"My solicitor told me: 'You'd be silly to sign that.' So I didn't."
