Bomb (SYDNEY)

The wealthy family of an 18-year-old Sydney schoolgirl is perplexed as to why their
daughter was targeted, after she was strapped to a suspected bomb for 10 hours overnight.

A manhunt is underway for the attacker, who was wearing a balaclava when the sophisticated
and complex device was attached to MADELEINE PULVER.

MADELEINE'S father WILLIAM PULVER is reportedly chief executive of Appen Butler Hill,
a linguistic solutions company.

Police have refused to confirm whether a ransom note was left at the scene, saying
only that they've had no contact with who ever carried out the attack.

The Daily Telegraph says MADELEINE was at home yesterday when a man wearing a balaclava
entered the house and ordered her to a front room, where he rigged up the explosive.

It says he told her that she could ring the police to alert them to to her situation,
but warned her to be guarded in what she said to them, or else he would remotely detonate
the bomb.

He said he'd be able to hear her and indicated that he'd placed listening devices around
the house.

Police says MADELEINE did a good job of keeping her emotions in check, and gave police
lots of information about the attacker.

Indon Helicopter (JAKARTA)

A search-and-rescue team will resume the search this morning for four Australians and
six Indonesians, who are missing after a helicopter lost contact with authorities minutes
after takeoff in the country's east.

There are reports the Bell 412 chopper crashed into a mountain in North Sulawesi province
yesterday afternoon.

The rescuers began to look for the helicopter soon after it went missing, but eventually
it became too dark to work and the team will return this morning.

Those on board apparently worked for a local mining company in Indonesia.

NBN Vic (MELBOURNE)

The Melbourne suburb of Brunswick will today become the first metropolitan area to
connect to the national broadband network.

Communications Minister STEPHEN CONROY will switch on the high-speed broadband network
at Brunswick Town Hall.

The NBN has so far been connected in the New South Wales south coast communities of
Kiama Downs and Minnamurra, Armidale in northern NSW, and three Tasmanian towns.

Next to be connected will be suburbs of Townsville in Queensland, and Willunga in South
Australia.

Tobacco (MELBOURNE)

A Senate committee will today begin examining the federal government's planned laws
to have cigarettes sold in plain packaging.

The committee will hear from the health department, various health groups and big tobacco
companies.

British American Tobacco Australia will be first to go before the hearing at Canberra's
Parliament House.

The company has argued plain packaging could increase smoking rates, the illegal tobacco
black market and put billions of taxpayer dollars in jeopardy.

Cattle (DARWIN)

A Senate inquiry into animal welfare standards in the live cattle trade is holding
a public hearing in Darwin today.

Northern Territory cattle producers were devastated by a month-long ban on live exports
to Indonesia, which followed public outrage over the treatment of cattle during slaughter
in Indonesian abattoirs.

Ahead of today's hearing, independent senator NICK XENOPHON met Top End cattle producers
upset at the parliamentary bill he's introduced that seeks to phase out live exports over
the next three years.

Boat Malaysia (JAKARTA)

Another boat with asylum seekers is due at Christmas Island today, as the Malaysian
government prepares to receive the first asylum seekers covered under its swap arrangement
with Australia.

The 54 mainly Afghan people will be the first group to be subject to the deal.

While Immigration Minister CHRIS BOWEN says it would take weeks before the government's
target of a 72-hour turnaround is achieved for every single person, it's now understood
that at least some of the group could be in Kuala Lumpur as early as Sunday.

Mr BOWEN's office has refused to confirm a date for the first transfers.

Under the deal signed in Kuala Lumpur last Monday, up to 800 asylum seekers who arrive
in Australia by boat, will be taken to Malaysia in exchange for four-thousand people who
have already been given refugee status.

Climate (CANBERRA)

Opposition treasury spokesman JOE HOCKEY says the coalition will consider axing the
department of climate change if it gets into government.

The coalition went to the last election promising to slash expenditure by getting rid
of 12-thousand public servants, and it seems workers at the climate change department
are top of the hit list.

Mr HOCKEY has accused the department of absolutely spreading false figures, and suggests
the public servants there could be some of the first to go under the plan to downsize
the public service.

He says the coalition's direct action policy will costing 3.2 billion dollars over
the first four years.

Betting (MELBOURNE)

A Victorian government review has found exotic bets pose a massive risk to the integrity
of sport.

Former Racing Victoria chairman of stewards DES GLEESON says sports controlling bodies
should be encouraged to negotiate deals with betting companies that include the power
to ban exotic bets, such as who kicks the first goal in an AFL game.

Victorian Gaming Minister MICHAEL O'BRIEN says his state is prepared to act alone if
a proposal for nationally consistent match fixing laws can't be agreed.

Egypt Mubarak Adjourn (CAIRO)

The trial of ousted Egyptian president HOSNI MUBARAK, and his two sons, has been adjourned

The only changes for Australia are expected on the bench, where lock DAN VICKERMAN,
halfback LUKE BURGESS and winger LACHIE TURNER are in line for promotions.

The All Blacks have key forward quartet KEVEN MEALAMU, OWEN FRANKS, BRAD THORN and
KIERAN READ all ready to return after being rested last week against South Africa.

India shock England.

Sachin Tendulkar claimed India's against the odds victory over England was one of the greatest of his long, illustrious career. The 'Little Master's' imperious 103 not out enabled India to record the fourth highest run chase in history and achieve the most improbable of victories. Until the hosts chased down the 387 runs needed, the highest fourth innings achieved for victory in Chennai was a meagre 155. And Tendulkar, who was brilliantly supported by partner in crime Yuvraj Singh (82 not out), said the victory was as sweet as they come. "This becomes a very, very special victory," the Indian legend said. "To score 387 is something to be proud of on a track where the ball is bouncing and jumping at the end." And of his own performance, which saw him hit his 41st Test century, he added: "I think this is a very, very important hundred because I always say if the team wins then the hundred becomes very special and today this hundred is very important." Tendulkar, who combined with Yuvraj for a match-winning unbeaten 163-run stand, added: "The gameplan was to wait for opportunities to score runs because you can't afford to get bogged down. "It was the kind of wicket where the bounce meant you could always play shots, we looked to put the bad balls away." The last day began with India on 131 for one knowing anything was still possible. When play resumed, India suffered a blow in the third over as Andrew Flintoff had the struggling Rahul Dravid caught behind by wicketkeeper Matt Prior for four. Dravid, a veteran of 130 Tests at an average of 52.12, may find the selectors lose patience with him after managing just 32 runs in his past four Tests. Gautam Gambhir, who shared a century stand with Virender Sehwag whose quickfire 83 on Sunday set up the victory charge, then put on 42 for the third wicket with Tendulkar as the Indians attempted to overcome the loss of Dravid. Left-hander Sehwag had moved to 66, his eighth Test half-century, when he flirted with a wide ball from James Anderson and gave Paul Collingwood a catch at gully. VVS Laxman made 26 before Tendulkar and Yuvraj took the game away from England. And Tendulkar was full of praise for Yuvraj. The big-hitting left-hander came into the Test under pressure to perform having flattered to deceive in the Test arena so far. But the fans' favourite did not disappoint as he mixed aggression with studious defence during his 131-ball 85. And Tendulkar said: "Yuvi batted brilliantly, as did Viru (Sehwag) and then Gautam (Gambhir)" For Yuvraj the win, and the part he played in it, was a dream come true. "Sachin said 'play your natural game'," he said. "But my dreams have come true as I used to dream of winning a Test match with him. I tried to stay focused and not get involved in any conversations [with England]." And while disappointed to lose a game his England side looked set to win, Kevin Pietersen said he could not fault his team who only decided to travel to the subcontinent at the last minute following the terror attacks in Mumbai. "To start a Test match two weeks after the tragedy in Mumbai, it's a fair show on both sets of players," the England skipper said. "There are lots of positives to take into our dressing room. "We came here here and put in a fantastic performance against India. "Sehwag started the innings fantastically on Sunday and then the 'Little Master'... as a skipper when you're trying to set fields to a magician like that, it's very difficult. "We came here to win, and unfortunately we got pipped." But he vowed to hit back come the second and final Test in Mohali, which starts on Friday. "It's a very, very bitter pill to swallow," Pietersen admitted. "After day one, if you'd said to us we would be defending 250 on the final day, we'd have taken that. "Our boys are hurting but we'll come back strong."

FED:Detainees protest on Christmas Island

(Eds: reissuing, inserting word "latest" in second par and correcting typo in third)

By Greg Roberts

MELBOURNE, Dec 17 AAP - Two separate protests involving more than 100 asylum seekers
erupted on Christmas Island on Friday, one of which has taken place outside the island's
detention centre.

A Department of Immigration spokesman said the latest protest was not a "break-out"

and detainees were moving back and forth between the centre and where the protest was
taking place at its entrance.

Detainees have held up signs and chanted "Help me, UN" on Friday in spontaneous protests
following Wednesday's disaster when a boat carrying asylum seekers, mostly from Iraq and
Iran, smashed into rocks on the island leaving at least 30 dead.

Survivors of the boat tragedy are taking part and have shown their injuries to media
located nearby and Department of Immigration officials were trying to persuade protesters
to return to the detention centre, which houses 2700 people, Sky News reported.

The department spokesman admitted detainees had jumped a fence to get to the entrance.

"They are not causing trouble and not going out on to the street, the detention service
providers are keeping an eye on them but it is peaceful and they are not going to push
it," he told AAP.

The protests had been triggered by Wednesday's disaster as well as conditions at the
centre, the Department spokesman said.

He said while the protesters were emotional there was no violence.

The first protest started at about 2pm (WST) in an area called Phosphate Hill, involving
about 50 people including some who jumped internal fences to join in, said the spokesman.

The second protest started after the first ended in another area nearby.

"The protesters raised concerns that not enough action was taken to rescue passengers
from the boat that sank," he told AAP.

"It was peaceful, there was no trouble but a lot of emotion, it was not surprising
they raised this issue which has received a lot of coverage and is tragic.

"The other concerns raised were about services such as food and air conditioning; there
was a power outage across the island so it affected residents in town but the clients
were not happy about the lack of air conditioning."

Australian Federal Police are present at the scene.

SA: More funding for health training in SA

SA: More funding for health training in SA

ADELAIDE, April 1 AAP - Extra funding for medical training places in South Australia
will result in better health care for local residents, the federal government says.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon said $10 million would be provided to support additional
clinical training places for students at Adelaide's three major universities.

The funding will support about 740 additional clinical placements for students currently
enrolled in medicine, nursing, optometry, physiotherapy, social work, dentistry, podiatry
and a number of other disciplines.

The training will be provided in medical practices throughout South Australia, many
in community and private settings not traditionally used for training.

"Providing high-quality clinical training opportunities in diverse settings will help
attract more students to learn and work across the private, public and not-for-profit
health sectors in Australia," Minister Roxon said in a visit to Flinders University in
Adelaide on Thursday.

"This in turn means more Australians will get better access to appropriate health care,
regardless of their location."

The extra funding in SA is part of $67.5 million to be provided by the government for
increased clinical training capacity grants through 65 projects across Australia.

The minister also opened Flinders University's new 250-seat, $6.5 million health lecture
theatre and tutorial rooms.

The new theatre delivers on an election commitment from the federal government to help
upgrade the teaching facilities at the university's school of medicine.

Fed: Climate change filmmaker says Australia must do more

By Alyssa Braithwaite, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, Aug 19 AAP - The director of a new film about climate change says Australians
should be up in arms at the government's "pathetic" efforts to tackle the issue.

Franny Armstrong's film The Age of Stupid is told from the perspective of an archivist
living in the year 2055 who looks back on why humankind failed to address climate change
and save itself.

Armstrong, 35, is in Australia to promote the movie which opens on Wednesday, and said
she had been amazed by the lack of debate, progress and public understanding of climate
change here.

"What's come through to the UK is that you've had all these climate impacts - the fires
and the droughts - and then the new guy (Kevin Rudd) came and he signed Kyoto and it's
all positive - and that's really not correct at all," Armstrong told AAP.

"I have to say the state of your politics is a little bit depressing here. It's like
being back in the 1980s climate change-wise."

The Age of Stupid was screened to 150 people at Parliament House in Canberra this week,
where Armstrong met and talked with politicians, but failed to secure a meeting with Prime
Minister Kevin Rudd.

The film states that countries like Australia need to cut their emissions by 40 per
cent by 2020 to have a 50/50 chance of preventing the temperature from raising by two
degrees and causing irreversible damage.

Armstrong said unless the Australian government commits to the 40 per cent cuts, it
was giving us a less than 50 per cent chance of survival.

"Imagine if they were saying, `ok Australian people, line up and get on this plane.

It's got a less than 50 per cent chance, on you get'," Armstrong said.

"Nobody would get on. But we're all on that plane and I can't believe the Australian
people are not up in arms.

"Why the hell is that?"

The Age of Stupid stars Pete Postlethwaite and uses a combination of documentary, drama
and animation to engage audiences.

The film interweaves six global stories, based around themes like war for resources,
even increasing consumption, and alternative energy.

While An Inconvenient Truth deals with the science of climate change, The Age of Stupid
looks at the human impact and moral questions.

Made with a production budget of just STG450,000 ($A900,900) which was invested by
members of the public, the film has been screened at the UK Parliament, the EU, Scottish,
Welsh, Swedish and Dutch parliaments, as well as the World Bank, the UN, and the Global
Humanitarian Forum hosted by Kofi Annan.

Armstrong said the carbon emissions required to fly to Australia to promote the film
were worth it if the film educated and inspired people to take action.

"The UK politicians are saying to me, if we make a deal as strong as the science says
is necessary, we would get kicked out in the next election," she said.

"So that's the public's role, to say yes we want that law, yes we're ready for it,
we appreciate we're going to have changes, but that's what we want."

NSW: Tony Stewart sacking challenge to be heard in Supreme Court

SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - Bankstown MP Tony Stewart has been given the "green light" to
have his legal challenge over his sacking from the state's ministry heard in the NSW Supreme
Court.

Mr Stewart is suing Chris Ronalds, SC, and the state of NSW over her report, which
found he bullied a female staff member at a charity dinner in October last year.

The report led to Mr Stewart being sacked as small business minister and he is challenging
the ruling on the grounds he was denied natural justice by Ms Ronalds and the state.

Mr Stewart and prosecutors had submitted his case be heard in the Court of Appeal to
determine several constitutional questions before other facts and evidence were dealt
with.

But on Thursday Justice Michael Adams determined the matter must proceed in a full
and detailed hearing within the Supreme Court's Administrative Law Section, before possibly
then proceeding to the Court of Appeal to determine the constitutional questions.

"Today's determination still provides the green light for me to proceed in the Supreme
Court with this matter," Mr Stewart said in a statement.

"I have said consistently that the allegations made about me that led to my dismissal
as a minister are untrue and I intend now to leave no stone unturned within the Supreme
Court to demonstrate the real truth about this issue."

Mr Stewart has said he is prepared to drop the legal challenge if Premier Nathan Rees
orders a new investigation into the bullying claims.

But the premier says that will not happen.

Qld: Man 'terrorised' by motorist: police

BRISBANE, Dec 30 AAP - A man is facing numerous charges, including stalking, after
allegedly trying to run down a tourist and a couple with a baby in far north Queensland.

Police today said a 29-year-old Mackay man holidaying in Cairns was "terrorised by
a motorist for no apparent reason".

The man was walking his dog along Mayers Street in the Cairns suburb of Edge Hill about
5pm (AEST) yesterday when a car passed him.

Police allege the passenger in the car yanked the steering wheel from the driver's
hands to try to strike the pedestrian.

The car then stopped and the passenger allegedly got into the driver's seat and twice
drove at the pedestrian and his dog on the footpath.

"The man took refuge behind a power pole to avoid being struck, however the car struck
him on the arm and also struck the dog," a police spokeswoman said.

"Neither was seriously injured."

The vehicle then allegedly drove towards a couple and their baby on the opposite footpath,
stopping "within metres" of them.

"The [first] victim hid in a yard for about 10 minutes before going to check on the
welfare of the family who were almost struck, when the vehicle returned," the spokeswoman
said.

"The driver allegedly got out of the car and threatened the man with a chain before
leaving the scene."

Police said the driver was not known to the victims and the motive behind the incident
was unclear.

A 46-year-old man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, stalking
with threats of violence, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and unlicensed driving.

He is due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Other quarterly data that feeds into the national accounts has been fairly benign,
notably yesterday's unexpected further drop in business inventories in the third quarter.

Australia's slim 0.3 per cent economic growth in the second quarter was partly blamed

New Spokane Mayor Follows Jim West Scandal

AP Online
01-04-2006
Dateline: SPOKANE, Wash.
The City Council president was sworn in as mayor Tuesday to replace Jim West, who was recalled last month over allegations that he offered jobs and perks to young men he met online.

Dennis Hession pledged "to be bold and creative" in moving beyond the extraordinary circumstances of the past seven months.

"It's not the situation that defines us ... but how we respond to it," Hession during a 10-minute ceremony.

Hession, 55, has been acting mayor since West was voted out of office by 65 percent of the vote in a special election Dec. 6.

West, a longtime Republican lawmaker and Boy Scout executive, has acknowledged having relationships with men but denies doing anything illegal. No charges have been filed but the FBI is investigating.

The scandal followed a series of articles in The Spokesman-Review alleging that West, 54, had used his office for personal benefit by soliciting dates from young men on gay Internet chat rooms.

West published an open letter to residents shortly before the election saying: "I have made personal mistakes, and ask forgiveness for those, but I have never done anything to harm our city."

early this year, around about Christmas time," Dr Limpus said.

But the baby turtles were not at risk of dying in the heat once they hatched.

"It would have to get pretty hot to create that problem," he said.

The loggerheads have been nesting at Mon Repos since November and their eggs take about
eight weeks to hatch.

Ranger-guided tours can be booked to view the turtles until March, but numbers were
limited to about 300 each night, Dr Limpus said.

Sometimes problems need to be fixed twice,Sometime problems need to be fixed twice

Dear Readers: Sometimes a fix is quick; other times we need to remember, to paraphrase Louis Pasteur, that our strength lies solely in our tenacity.

That's what we were thinking when we heard again from William Beck of Crystal Lake.

In December, we wrote about Bill's Twilight Zone-esque saga, in which he couldn't locate his lost shares of Motorola stock. Until The Fixer took on Bill's case, we'd never dreamed that a stock account could disappear. But Bill's money was firmly in a black hole, having somehow vanished when the brokerage firm Bear Stearns collapsed. Bill was at his wits' end, having been bounced from person to person in his quest to find the stock.

The Fixer didn't have it much easier. Our search took us from the Illinois State Treasurer's Office to Motorola to Morgan Stanley to Chase Bank, where someone finally determined that the stock was being held at BNY Mellon.

We connected Bill with an executive at Chase who walked him through the process to get the account back under his control and order replacement stock certificates.

Everyone at Fixer HQ was elated — Bill's stocks would soon be back home!

But then of course, it got gummed up and Bill got stuck in BNY Mellon call-center limbo. Meanwhile, Motorola's stock price was rising and Bill wanted his money.

So The Fixer bugged a managing director at BNY Mellon. After about a month, the fix was back on track. BNY Mellon worked with Chase to free Bill's shares, and just last week they sent him a check for the cash value.

And now, to paraphrase Frederick Pabst: It's time for a beer.

Microsoft wins temporary ceasefire to pursue face-to-face talks.

Microsoft has won a temporary reprieve from a US government anti-trust lawsuit by agreeing to delay the release of Windows 98 for a few days.

The temporary "ceasefire" will allow the US Justice Department, a number of US states, and Microsoft to pursue a negotiated settlement in a new round of face-to-face talks starting today. fri

The disclosure came an hour before federal and state regulators were to announce one of the largest ever US anti-trust cases, accusing Microsoft of abusing its power and driving competitors from the lucrative software market.

The Windows 98 update to the successful Windows 95 system had been scheduled to be shipped today to give computer makers time to load it on to new computers for the planned worldwide launch next month.

The company said: "Microsoft confirms it has completed all work to develop Windows 98 but has agreed with the Department of Justice and state attorneys general not to release to computer manufacturers until Monday."

The company still planned to release Windows 98 on June 25, it added.

Microsoft said the negotiations began a week ago following a meeting between its chairman, Mr Bill Gates, and Government officials.

In a short statement, the Justice Department confirmed it would temporarily delay filing a major new anti-trust action against the company.

"The Department of Justice, a coalition of state attorneys general, and Microsoft are engaged in discussions.

"They have reached an agreement under which, while the discussions continue over the next several days, Microsoft will not ship Windows 98, and the Department of Justice and states will not file lawsuits," the statement said.

The Justice Department has been joined by at least 20 states in its battle with Microsoft.

Some leading computer manufacturers had asked the US government not to delay Windows 98, agreeing with Microsoft that interfering with the launch would hurt their business and the US economy.

Mr Gates said "an entire ecosystem" of computer hardware, software and retail companies depended on the timely release of Windows 98.

In 1995, Microsoft avoided a major anti-trust lawsuit by agreeing not to require computer makers buying its operating systems to buy other Microsoft products.

Last year the government went to court complaining Microsoft had violated that agreement by abusing its dominant position to dissuade computer makers from installing a rival Internet browser.

At the close of the National Stationery Show on May 19, exhibitors may choose not to pack up all their samples and to help children's charities at the same time. Exhibitors may donate products to Companies for Kids, a stationery and gift industry non-profit organization that collects merchandise from manufacturers, distributors, reps, and retailers. Appropriate children's merchandise is distributed directly to charities nationwide, while nonjuvenile merchandise is used to raise operating funds for the organization.

George Little Management (GLM), the show's producer, is providing a convenient drop-off point just off the show floor on the main level of the Javits Convention Center in New York. This is the third year that GLM and Companies for Kids has provided this link between exhibitors and the children's charities. Notes Hillary Taylor, founder of Companies for Kids, "Thanks to the nearly 300 members of the gift industry who have so generously donated their products and services to Companies for Kids, we've already brought merchandise to more than a quarter of a million children! We owe much of our success to GLM and to the generous donations of exhibitors at the National Stationery Show."

How much cash should you raise?(Mergers, IPOs, and Venture Finance)

* Don't leave yourself stranded: Jordan Levy, co-founder of what is now SoftBank Services Group, is convinced that most entrepreneurs chronically underestimate their working capital needs. "In 17 years in the computer business, I have almost never seen a company fail because they had too much money. 90% of companies that haven't succeeded have done so because they were foolish, greedy, or just not aggressive enough to raise the proper amount of money when they could. My rule of thumb is, figure out what you need, double it, and don't be afraid of dilution."

* Don't raise too much: Intuit senior vice president John Monson disagrees: "Many small businesses have a tendency to take too much investment money too soon," he warns. "The result is pressure to deliver growth before they're ready. They change focus from creating great customer value and building a durable organization to meeting arbitrary business plan goals."
